Be Strong and Courageous

My women's Bible study is studying the book of Joshua.
My favorite verse is 1:9.

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous.
Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God
will be with you wherever you go."

It was given to me by a friend my first year in college. I was scared and unsure... venturing into new territory. That verse became a part of me as I meditated on it. God used it to minister to my heart and challenge me to step out in faith.

God continues to speak to me through it almost 20 years later.

Do you have a special verse like that?

If so, I'd love to hear it and know why it is special to you.

And... I'd love to send a couple randomly selected commentors a bookmark... just because.

Linda ~ Thank you for that verse! It comes to me at a very good time. :)

The verse that comes to my mind has been a favorite ever since Jenn Avila (my room leader) gave it to me at my first CCSLO women's retreat (maybe in '01?).

Phil. 4:7 ~ And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
It's cool because, it just came back to me again in my new study. God's sweet like that. :)

Interestingly, my verse is Phil 4:8. Maybe the next commenter will have Phil 4:9. :)

It has been a verse that has followed me throughout my life. It's the one that I love teaching my students because you can practically see the lightbulbs going off over their heads when we start discussing what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable in their lives.

It is so practical and clear. Not that I always follow its advice, but it comes to mind when my attitude needs adjusting. My attitude only needs adjusting when I'm not keeping my focus on the whole truth and the nobility, righteousness, purity, loveliness, and admirability of truth.

I have to break the pattern here. My life verse is Proverbs 3:5-6. It is the verse that I fall back on every time I am struggling with something, and it always brings peace into my life. It has, as Jen said, followed me throughout my life, and without knowing this, my mom mounted and framed the verse for me a couple of years ago. Now it stays above my bed so that I can see it every day.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path."
~Proverbs 3:5-6

i love that verse. i remember driving to the hospital to have Noah, and seeking a verse (and really God), when God said " be strong and courageous, do not be discouraged, do not be terrified, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

But my favorite verses are
"Because Your love is better than life my lips will glorify You i will praise you as long as i live."
psalm 63:4-3

life has been very up and very down, and i want to be grounded in that verse no matter the what circumstances. and i want to praise Him whatever the circumstances.

I love how God told Joshua to be strong and courageous and then reminded him 2 more times. :) I need God to remind of his promises all the time.

The verse that I keep going back to again & again is Rom. 12:12- "Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying."
As a mom I find that some times it's hard to be patient with "trouble" running around the house. I have kind of simplified the verse for those moments & tell myself "be happy, breathe & pray". It gives me that moment I need to refocus on what's really important right then.

p.s. I found your blog through jeninslo. :)

Couldn't have been a better verse at a better time. Thanks. I always seem to lean on Phil. 4:13.
